Monte Antico IGT 2006

Picked this up for 7$ at Costco. Just as good as the Perrin Cotes du Rhone for 7$, even though I view the whole "Super Tuscan" thing with a healthy dose of skepticism. Mostly Sangiovese; it shows in the copious amounts of leather on the nose (the rest is Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon). This wine also has lots of cherry/blackberry to support its' acidic frame alongside a mildly earthy finish. For 7$, this is an awesome deal. A

Fitting that there's a picture of your wallet next to the bottle. I had similar impressions of this--would be disappointed if it were $20+ but for $7 this is a winner. I felt it was one of the more consistent sub $10 reds I drank all year.

I bought about a half case of this over the winter and it came in handy to pair with some of the heavier stuff I was cooking then. With fall approaching maybe I'll head back to Cosco and pick up some more.

Um, I meant to say that it's fitting your wallet is next to the bottle in the photo. No more pre-coffee commenting.

Yeah, I really liked this wine, Super Tuscan and all. It's rare for such cheap wine to be so decent...it's probably a 1 in 20 or 1 in 25 type of thing. I didn't consciously put my wallet there, but you're right--it makes for a more interesting picture. I normally just take out my phone and take a picture wherever the bottle is. That day, it just happened to be on the table amidst a bunch of crap instead of on the counter.

I think I've tasted this one once, but paid like $12 or $13 from a wine shop. At $7 I'm all over this for the earthiness and Sangio character.

12$ is too steep for this wine. 7 or 8$ is spot on, especially with food. I was surprised how much savory character the wine had. It was a 2006--I don't know if that's the current release. Anyways...Normally, cheap Super Tuscans are all about the chocolate covered cherry. Anyways, this is also a good "red sauce Italian" wine. And it sports a screw-cap, so it's portable.
