2006 Nerelo del Bastardo

No designation anywhere on this wine, although it seems to be from Piedmonte guessing by the portion of the label talking about how this is the same wine that ages for three years and the government only gives out so many neck labels...that leads me to guess Barbaresco? Everywhere on line says that older vintages are from Piedmonte, so that makes sense. It seems closer to Sangiovese though flavor-wise, so maybe it's a Chianti? Who knows...7$ at Trader Joes. There are lots of black cherries, a touch of leather, herbs, and a spicy finish. Maybe a little harsh at times and a bit simple, but for the price it's fairly good. B+/A-

I had the 2002 version and liked it for the price. Pretty acidic, but with nice leathery and cherry aromas. My guess is that was declassified Nebbiolo from a disastrous vintage in Piedmont. Would have been a bad value as Barolo or Barbaresco, but nice for $7.

I guess I should see what '06 is about. That's a big jump in vintages in a year!

I was expecting to really dislike this...they TJ's has an '06 Langhe Nebbiolo that isn't that great. But this, although a bit simple, was really pretty good, which I find to be rare in this price range at Trader Joes.

Just got the '07. Really good for the price point. Not thin, not fat, not shrill--it's balanced. That's a real win at $8. Not complex, with a bit of overipeness on the nose, but as a table wine I'd recommend it quite highly.
